Popeye's began in 1972 in a suburb outside New Orleans as "Chicken on the Run". After a year, founder Al Copelend changed the restaurant's name to Popeye's , naming it after the character Popeye Boyle in the movie "The French Connection". Copeland opened the first Popeye's franchise in Baton Rouge, followed by 500 others in the next decade. After America's Favorite Chicken (AFC) bought Popeye's, they moved the corporate headquarters to Atlanta, GA. Popeye's has won many awards from the food industry, and continues to stay in the lead.
